25 Years of PHP (by the Creator of PHP)

PHP has been around for almost as long as the Web. 25 years!
Join me for a fun look at the highlights (and lowlights) of this crazy trip. But I will also be trying to convince you to upgrade your PHP version. The performance alone should be enough, if not, I have a few other tricks up my sleeve to try to win you over. Performance optimization, static analysis, zero-cost profiling, dead code elimination and escape analysis are just some of the concepts that will be covered.

  1. I can't understand why the creator of PHP said "using php5 is irresponsible" I think it's irresponsible to say that and I felt insulted, WHAT if my clients don't want to pay for me to upgrade? does that make me irresponsible? and if YES, should I shut down their site? IT Works! NOW Let's Take PHP 8 for example which has just been released 2 years later than this video – 8.0.2, when using SOAP extension to connect to a SOAP server, a malicious SOAP server could return malformed XML data as a response that would cause PHP to access a null pointer and thus cause a crash.

  2. php was my first programming language. ive learned php, js, html, mysql for a schoolproject in two days. i basically didnt sleep and got hooked on programming. (a website to sell pupils cd keys for school software. fun fact the teacher then used it to sell cd keys private which got him fired years later)

it is extremly intuitive to learn and you see what you do. its not like a object oriented language like java. though they also have their strength. php is straight forward

  3. Rasmus showing a slide of a baby pram in the snow: "This is me."
Me: "Haha that's a good one."
Rasmus showing the rest of his baby photos in the snow.
Me: "Holy crap this is real."

  4. Cool guy… I don't know why PHP is so criticized today, especially with all of the improvements in version 7 and 8. Probably a lot of people don't understand how to use it right.

  5. Sr, your progamming language just guided me through this awesome world, PHP changed my life 4 years ago I discovered coding in PHP was my real passion on life no other programming language gave me that amazing inspiration that led me to being a professional on what I'm doing, I couldn't be more thankful for what you did. My respect for you, Master.
