►NEW Dedicated Servers, Intro on how to get one running~ Update V0.59 | The Forest

–Links down below–
Dedicated servers is the major change in this update, if you’re looking for something new inside the game specifically (that’s not a bug fix) then look forward to the next update in 16 days~ If you’re here to learn about dedicated servers this is my first video on that 😀

If we learn better/new techniques/features I will be happy to improve the tutorial but seeing as this is just the beginning I hope that you can find this video helpful in learning how to start a dedicated server 🙂

If you’re confused about joining a dedicated server simply go to the game panel like I show in the very beginning of the video (from the start menu click co-op and then click join) and then select dedicated server. I can’t show it at the end because when I try to join my own server on my own screen it crashes my server and at the time I was testing no one had a server up (besides my crashing my own when I tried lol). I can confirm it works though as I had a few people join in ^_^

How to port forward: https://portforward.com/router.htm
Ports you need to forward (both UDP/TCP)
8766, 27015 and 27016

What is my local IP Address?: https://www.whatismybrowser.com/detect/what-is-my-local-ip-address

(May not work if you have a bunch of script/privacy blocking, but if you know how to do that you probably dont need this either lol)

You can still use SteamCMD but copy paste this into your web browser for a much easier method (now the devs updated steam): steam://install/556450 if you’re unsure or it doesn’t work I’ve made a video on how to do it so no worries ^_^, watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4b3o9NQLlk

How to use/Download SteamCMD: https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/SteamCMD#Downloading_SteamCMD
The appid is: 556450 if you want to still use SteamCMD.

I found the AppID from here: https://steamdb.info/app/556450/

Special thanks to Broadbent who reminded me to run SteamCMD rather than hitting refresh like an idiot, thanks man lol. Check his channel out here: youtube.com/oab

Once you run dedicated server (then close it so you can edit the file) it’ll make this location you can use to configure your steam.cfg (copy paste it into the bar in the folder explorer): %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowSKSTheForestds

As talked in the video you do not have to use the steam.cfg you could just add a bunch of parameters to your shortcut, like how I added -dedicated you would instead add stuff like this: -serverip xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -serversteamport 8766 -servergameport 27015 -serverqueryport 27016 -servername TheForestGameDS -serverplayers 8 -difficulty Normal -inittype Continue -slot 1

(of course changing the xxx into your local ip address)

If when you host your server it says 0/0 try restarting steam (the client), or the computer, this has helped someone else~!

Broadbent who first suggested SteamCMD as the tool wasn’t available. (Another did like 2 mins later, but Broadbent won that race, plus he’s another good The Forest youtuber so check him out~!)

Normster14 and 4N1M470R jumped to testing my server right away, and ran around and saved, later EvilWeasil and KingKirby too 🙂

Thank you! ❤️

  1. Wow! Haha, this video is a bit technical [links below]! If you're looking for new items or stuff in the game please look forward to the next update in 16 days, this update adds dedicated servers and some bug fixes only~

Please feel free to ask questions if you're having issues or have questions!

  2. I Followed every steps, and I believe I made it correctly. But the Issue persists
The Server is not appearing on the Internet instead it appears only on LAN.

Do you have any idea how to fix it ?

  3. I really dont understand why my server only shows in dedicated LAn and not internet dedicated, i have open all Three ports that are needed and also added the program to be allowed through windows 10 firewall . plz help =(

  4. please help me , i make a dedicated server but it say "server is running on a different version of the game" i don't know how to fix it and i try to ask people and no one know please help me !

  5. Alright, a couple issues I have. First I had the issue of the server appearing in the (Lan) part not (internet) part is that normal? and when the server was going in the (LAN) part the server was there but it said that the Forest game was a different version of the dedicated server… Can someone please help… Thanks

  6. I seem to continuously get the message
"Log: Failed to connect to Steam"
whenever I try to launch from the shortcut but I do not get it when launching from Steam. Problem is, if I launch from Steam, I can't find it in the dedicated server browser. Anyone might know what's going on?
Also, when I launch from Steam, it gives me the error
"Error: Trying to reload asset from disk that is not stored on disk"
    Any help is appreciated

  7. I installed the server through Steam (the new method), set my config files, and did the port forwarding. I then start the game, then launch the dedicated server (playing on same machine), then when the Forest browser opens, I get an error that is red and nothing shows up. When I click on the other options, nothing happens, and I have to go through taskmgr to kill the process. I did a reboot and restarted Steam, but no luck. Ever since this new update, I am unable to play in Co Op.
